FAST TEMPO

Thursday, April 26, 2012

I had grape nuts for breakfast and a smothered taco at Las Glorias with Corey for lunch.

At just before 4:00 p.m. I started my walk; every other day is working well for me at the present. I walked past the church to 800 South, west to Redwood Road then south to Centennial Boulevard and around the Centennial building. From there I walked along Parkway Boulevard to the next subdivision road on the left where I went west on that road and took the sidewalk to Redwood Road. I went to the next road and took the sidewalk and road to Parkway Boulevard and north again. I kept going back and forth between Redwood and Parkway Boulevard all the way to Saratoga Drive where I went east toward home walking through the two circles in our ward.

For whatever reason my body wanted to walk fast (fast for me) and I kept it up the whole way though near the end the body wanted to slow down some but I forced myself to maintain the faster speed.

I walked for 2:04:13 hours, 6.74 miles at an average speed of 3.3 mph. I burned 778 calories.

Two times ago I told myself that my immediate goal was to walk for two hours. I guess I need to come up with a new immediate goal now.

MITT and OBAMA

Tuesday, April 24, 2012—11:20 a.m.

Len (Pavia) and I just finish “Ward Teaching” at the end at Lunt’s, Gary mentioned an editorial cartoon from Bolivia that someone they know who lives there called and told him about.

Mitt Romney and President Obama are talking and President Obama says to Mitt, “I have some good news and some bad news.”

Mitt, “Well what’s the good news?”

Obama, “I think it is time we have a Mormon as president!”

Mitt, “What’s the bad news?”

Obama, “I’m getting baptized Saturday.”

WALK 'TIL YOU DROP

Thursday, April 19, 2012
At 2:30 this afternoon I went for one of my walks. Again I walked to the Centennial Building by way of Redwood road and back on Parkway. This time I didn’t take any shortcuts, in fact I took a couple of side trips. I walked for 1:36 hours, 4.47 miles, burned 445 calories at an average speed of 2.8 miles per hour.
Already I can tell I am getting stronger and my knees are handling it better.

My immediate goal is to be able to keep it up for 2:00 hours.

what a day

I couldn’t sleep I kept twitching and tossing and turning so I got up and got on the computer, checked my weight, my blood sugar and my blood pressure. My weight was up; has been for a few days but after today and all the time I spent in the bathroom I am thinking…hoping it will be down. I didn’t eat today except one apple and two jalapeƱo slices…I also read for a while in the Old Testament…the book of Zechariah.

Later in the afternoon the sky cleared, the sun came out and there was but a slight breeze. It was 52 degrees so I forced myself to go for a walk. It has been that way all my life…hard to get going. I walked to Redwood Road then south to the Centennial building. That’s what everyone calls the LDS chapel that’s there on the corner. I came home the shorter way. My knees were hurting a little…less as the walk went on…I was careful with them. I walked 4.1 miles in an hour and 27 minutes at an average speed of 2.8 mph and burned 407 calories…I have an app on my phone that keeps track of the data.

I was about a third of the way home when Corey called and asked where I was. I told him. He said to hurry up and get home. “We are going to PF Chang’s in Orem to eat.” As an afterthought he said “Take time to shower and put on deodorant, when you sweat you stink bad.” (I got that from my father…phew.)

Dinner was good we ordered four dishes and shared them. I got Salt and Pepper shrimp. It came with a spicy dipping sauce. Stacey complained about it being too hot. Jayden said, “Watch Mom” he grabbed one of the shrimp dipped it in the sauce to the point of saturating it and put it in his mouth. “Umm good!” He can handle the heat. Corey mentioned that when they go to a certain Mexican restaurant that has food that is “too” spicy for a lot of people, Jayden gets the spicy burrito and gobbles it down, no problem. Tonight he ate five or six shrimp and each time he would say, “Watch Mom!” After the first couple of times she turned her head not to look. She couldn’t bear seeing him do it.

Bailey wasn’t feeling so well and didn’t eat very much of her children’s menu chicken. Stacey said that Bailey did very well at swim-team practice.

I received the lab results from my last visit and the results of my bone density scan. Shelly said; bone density scan, “Fred, you have osteopenia. You need to get on 750 mg of calcium with 44 mg of vit d twice a day. Also increase your weight bearing exercise. If you don’t take some evasive action you will end up with osteoporosis. Shelly”

From the lab results she said “Fred, Great improvement on the sugars. Keep pushing the fluids to help you kidneys out. Shelly”

FINAL FAREWELL to 2011-2012 CHIRONS

Friday 12 April, 2012
Tonight I went to Taylorsville High School Chiron Showcase…Staring Sierra Jepson.
They invited Eisenhower Junior and Bennion Junior dancers and cheerleaders to put on their presentations too. Some of them were boys. I started thinking the Jayden is going into junior high next year and I think if he would try out he would be good and especially with his personality would be the star by the end of ninth grade.
The Chirons did seven numbers plus Sierra (and others) did her solo that she won everything with at Nationals. They really put on a good show and Sierra was front and center nearly the whole time.
Chris said they were practicing at 5:00 a.m. practicing then decorated the gym. I assume they went to classes too then tonight…I think they were pooped but danced their hearts out.

Twice lately when I was driving Jayden and Bailey to lunch or swimming Jayden mentioned asking Kate out (be his girlfriend). When he said that she said no or not this year he said “I went into a corner and cried a little—died a little.”
I think it was just an expression of his disappointment.

Funny that he is so open with these things with me.

CATCHING UP

Sunday, April 08, 2012

It has been a few days since I have checked in.
Friday, I pick Bailey up from school and drove her to swim team at the LLAC via Burger King. While we were driving she announced that “today” was maturation day at school. She had a bewildered look on her face. She didn’t really enjoy it especially the part where they taught the girls how to use a Tampon.
I asked if they had doughnuts afterwards. She said they had cake and punch.
I have been on her about Good Better and Best, mainly we were talking about swimming. Her response is always Good Better and Who gives a crap. But at swimming this time she was the first instead of last to push away from the end and start towards the other end, and she pushed it pretty hard though not her best every time. There is one BIG kid that usually beats her to the other end but his technique is terrible, he’s just really big. There is another kid (who, Friday was in the next lane) who was pretty much stride by stride with Bailey. When Bailey was really “pushing it” she would zoom past him; when she settled into her easy pace he would pass her up. It went back and forth that way for the entire forty-five minutes.
Either Corey or Stacey said that the coaches would like to put her onto the white team except they feel she has missed too many practices. Stacey has been holding her out of Wednesdays so she can get some work done around the house; but it is nice that they think she is good enough to move up a notch. I was pleased that she has been giving some credence to what her parents and I have been telling her about trying harder; especially since we think she has potential to be a really good swimmer.
Last night at our pool, Corey asked her to see if she could swim all the way to the bottom of the deep end; ten feet down if I am not mistaken. A minute later Corey yelled to me to come watch. Albeit she was wearing her cut off flippers they use in team practice, but still she was going from floating on top of the water to touching the bottom with her hands in somewhere between one and two seconds. She raced her dad across the pool and beat him by about half a body length.
Jayden swam down to the bottom but came up with his ears killing him. It hurt for a while but it went away after awhile.
Stacey was laughing…or speaking in a bewildered tone of voice about taking Jayden to see the chiropractor. She had never been there before. It had always been me who has taken him. She said. “We walked in and I waited at the counter for someone to talk to us. To my surprise, Jayden walked in said, ‘Hi Tom” signed in on the sheet and walked back to the table. He laid down the way he is supposed to and ‘Tom’ worked on him. Dr. Allen said ‘you must be his mother, where is Fred?”
“He did his adjusting and Jayden got up. When he was finished, Jayden said, ‘Tom how many do I have left’. He looked at his records and said, ‘five’” I have been prepaying ten at a time. He has a deal that if you do that, it amounts to $15.00 a visit instead of $20.00.
Stacey was amazed at the way Jayden handled himself. I’ll bet it didn’t surprise Tom any after all the times he has adjusted him. He has even said that Jayden knows when to come in by the way his back feels. I suppose he has gotten over the surprise at how talkative Jayden and Bailey are.
Janette and her two youngest are/were in town staying at Mike and Nikki’s so we invited everyone to our house for dinner and a visit. Janette, Adam and Kate came as did Mike, Ryan and Matt. There were Corey and his family, Niki and gang though Greg showed up late. He had a golf match. Austin brought Molly and Sierra and Mark each drove separately. Mark was sporting a new hairdo it was short on the sides and went straight up and was flat on the top; rather high. He being half Fijian, his hair is kinky. I told him “If the floor gets dirty I will turn you upside down and use you for a mop.”
Molly finally has a boyfriend. She is quite embarrassed and won’t talk about it and I decided not to push the issue like I am want to. (I don’t even know what his name is or anything about him. After questioning her she as much as said he is in her school; she just got red when I asked her if he was.) She had a big silly grin on her face all night.
She and Sierra stayed overnight.
We had chicken half breasts stuffed with asparagus, green onion, mozzarella etc., funeral potatoes and of course chips and dip hors d'oeuvres etc.
Christina couldn’t come because Kyra is into gymnastics and they were going to a meet at the University of Utah.

Some time ago when I had Gavin at the dinosaur museum at Thanksgiving point we got silly and started singing, Gavin/or Gavin and Grandpa/ or Grandpa up in a tree eating potato chips, then laugh. Last night Gavin came up to me and said “Do you know the song about monkey’s jumping on the bed?” I answered that I did. He then said he made up a new song and sang it to me. ‘Two little monkeys jumping on the bed, one fell off and landed in a tree.’” I thought that was quite an imagination for a three-year old.
Jayden made up a new song too a week or so ago…how did that go? Hmm. Oh yea. I don’t remember the exact words but it amounted to this: “
There’s a place in France where the naked women dance; but they were so fat I moved to Utah.
“There’s a place in Utah were the naked women dance: but they were so fat and ugly I’m going back to France.”
From a 12-year old.
Last night Gracie was really alert and active; looking at everyone and smiling. She is holding her head quite well on her own…it won’t be too long before she starts making up songs.
